Latest Updates from Our Project:

£75k Double Unlock! Rulebook link. Tabletopia link. Plan for final Push
over 1 year ago – Wed, Dec 07, 2022 at 04:12:31 AM

£75k reached - double unlock achieved!

Please note there is no lore in this update as there are a number of real world things about LU to cover.

We would sincerely like to thank each and every one of you for helping us reach this crucial part of the campaign. We will keep fighting the fight and do our best to continue stretching out more benefits for you in the remaining hours.

Unlock 1: You did it, you helped us break through £75k. Thank you! We will now be adding 2 new standalone Adventures to the Deepsorrow set taking the total number of added Scenarios to 4. That's another 4 to 6 hours of gameplay in that set!

 Unlock 2:

Wonderful stuff! By reaching £75k you have helped us create the Weeping Caves Enhanced Edition - I know I say it a lot but it is absolutely genuine - thank you!

We can go back to the set that started it all off and add in a few little 'Designer Cuts' items that we had wanted to and it was just not possible the first time round.

We are adding 20% more cards to the set comprising:

  •  5 more Locations taking the total from 15 to 20
  •  2 more Obstacles taking the total from 13 to 15
  •  2 more Discoveries taking the total from 13 to 15
  •  1 more Barrier taking the total from 11 to 12
  •  5 more Booby Traps taking the total from 5 to 10
  •  6 more Foes (note three of those are multiple of existing cards to bring this set in line with Deepsorrow) taking the total number of Foes to 13 to 19 (of which 3 are multiples)
  •  5 more Loot taking the total from 10 to 15
  •  4 more Events taking the total from 8 to 12

This really is a substantially stretched version of the Weeping Caves that will add more variety to all your adventures.

One of the joys of creating the Enhanced Edition is the inclusion of Thuban Asharat (another Boss type Foe). We will be tweaking one of the original Adventures to introduce Thuban. For now you can have a glimpse at Thuban in all his drooling glory. I wouldn't linger too long though, it tends not to work out well for reluctant heroes unless they are well prepared for the fight!

Please note I hope to have a new Location to share with you tomorrow if possible, the artists are working on it just now.

What does this mean for my pledge?

Newcomer & All In pledges - the box will be tweaked to show it as 'Enhanced Edition' and the new content included in the box.

Quest & New Content pledges - the content described above (excluding the box) will be added to your pledges.

For those that are backing the new Upgrade Kit Add On we released in the past Update we will also add the cards to that package for you so that you benefit from the new content.

The MSRP of this additional content is £10 thank you for helping us deliver it!

 Final Push

The next Stretch Goal is the previously announced £80k Meeting the Rasni Goal. This will add a further 4x Loot and 1x Event to the Novice Booster 2 set.

We are also excited to reveal a number of other Stretch Goals to try and stretch the game as much as possible in the remaining hours of the campaign.

£85k 2 more standalone adventures will be added to the Deepsorrow set, taking the total number of added Scenarios to 6 giving an additional 6-9 hours of gameplay.

£90k To the Wrathlands the final part of the prelude story showing the journey of the Initiate to Deepsorrow. 4 more Loot and 1x Event to add to the Novice Booster 2 set.

That's all for now folks - it has been a huge day for the campaign. I'm off to the campsite to recharge the batteries for tomorrow.

Best wishes to you all.

900 backers. 2 New Add Ons!
over 1 year ago – Wed, Dec 07, 2022 at 12:51:14 AM

Hello Adventurers!

Once again, we would like to thank each and every one of you for your support in this quest! We wouldn't have gone so far without you!

We have been listening to what you have been requesting and we have been trying to figure out what the best way would be to bring you what you want. Without further ado, we are happy to announce two new Add Ons! Those will be added in the campaign, as well as the pledge manager.

Add On #1: Novice Set Upgrade Kit
(note we have no product image as explained below)

Price £12 plus £7 shipping

A number of you have indicated an interest in an Add On that would upgrade the first printing Weeping Caves and Great Sewers sets with the key component upgrades from the new second printing sets.

Please note if you are backing either the Newcomer Pledge or All In pledge you do not need this Add On, it is already included in the set you will receive. If you are backing the Quest or New Content pledge you do not need this Add on, the components will be added to your pledge for free.

It has taken us a few days to bottom out the make up of this Add On as we needed to explore the art of the possible with Whatz as well as how we could ship this to people that want it.

Before I go any further let me show you a diagram of the V2 (current state) Deepsorrow punchboards. These are not identical to, but are a good indicator of, what the new Caves and Sewers punchboards will look like (note we do not have the final make up of those punchboards because we have not closed the Stretch Goals yet).

These punchboards will not fit into the original Caves and Sewers boxes, however when you punch the contents they will.

The diagram below shows you the reverse of the Deepsorrow Punchboards. I have called out those things that I think show the differences compared to the original sets. The Punchboards for the reprinted Caves and Sewers will be in a similar style but we will remove tokens you don't need (e.g. Shock tokens) and change the Hero and Creature tokens to match those sets specifically.

The Contents of this Add On will therefore be:

  • A white tuck box (roughly A4 sized) with a barcode on it.
  • 2x Readiness tracker Double poker cards
  • 2x Punchboards from the Weeping Caves reprint
  • 2x Punchboards from the Great Sewers reprint
  • 2 replacement cards for the Caves and Sewers that have slight errors in them
  • 2x replacement Adventures for the Weeping Caves set
  • PDFs of the Core Rulebook
  • If we unlock it we will also include all of the cards from the Weeping Caves Enhanced Edition (to be outlined in the £75k Unlock Update if we reach it, MSRP £10).

Please note we have included lower shipping with this Add-On to try and keep costs a low as possible. By way of illustration, the cost for us to get this product from China to the US and then from a fulfilment house in the US to an address in the US will be about $18USD. The costs are very similar from other hubs.

If backers want to purchase this Add-On plus any other item we will need to apply the normal shipping rates shown in the Campaign. Shipping will be collected via the pledge manager after the campaign closes.

Add On #2: Novice Booster Set 3  - The Cryptic Collection

price £15 no additional shipping if added to Newcomer, Quest, New Content or All In Quest

This is a bundle of cool content we want to offer up which we think some of you may find interesting. These are not essential to play the game, but they offer new choices to try out.

The Novice Booster Set 3 is a collection of unusual objects (trying not to use a defined game term we already have) that comprises the following:

Mysterious Potions: 6 Flasks + 6 Potion Recipes

  • This includes a new mechanic where you can find the Flasks and then identify them during Camp Actions to unlock one off Potions. Note you do not need the Potions & Preps Expansion to use these Potions, but if you have it then you can find any of those Potions with this mechanic.

Knowledge of Deepsorrow: 6 Tomes + 12 Mini poker Knowledge cards

  • This includes a new mechanic where you can find the Tomes and then learn more about Deepsorrow from them.

Magical Remnants: 6 Curios + 6 Preparation Recipes

  • This includes a new mechanic where you can find the Curios and then identify them during Camp Actions to unlock one off use Preparations. Note you do not need the Potions & Preps Expansion to use these Potions, but if you have it then you can find any of the Preparations with this mechanic.

Knowledge of Caves & Sewers:  24 Mini poker Knowledge cards

  • This includes a new mechanic where you can find the 6 Tomes (noted above) and then learn more about the Caves and Sewers.

So in summary that is 6 Flasks, 6 Tomes, 6 Curios as new Item card types.  6 Potions and 6 Preparation cards. 36 Mini poker Knowledge cards.

How do I get the add ons?

If you like either of the add ons, then you can get them by either:

  • Click on the "manage your pledge" option, then change the amount to include the add on(s) that you like. In this case you will have to choose the add ons during the Pledge Manager OR
  • Go to the add-ons section on the left hand side of the page, and get the add on(s) by following the instructions of the page.

Once again we would like to thank you for your support! Spread the word for the new Legends Untold installment and let's push in the final 48hrs of the campaign to unlock even more Stretch Goals!

£70k - To Gnimshkenka
over 1 year ago – Fri, Dec 02, 2022 at 10:29:06 PM

Well well,

after plateauing for ages in the 60s we are now firmly into the 70s - any other prog rock fans out there?

Awesome stuff (groovy even)!

We are so grateful for everybody that has joined us on the journey. We continue to take your feedback on the page, please keep it coming, it helps us build a better experience for everyone.

£70k unlock

For now I can confirm that we are adding four new Loot Cards and a new Event (Glowing Rocks) into the Novice Booster 2 set which everyone will be able to use to expand your adventures further.

I'd like to do a little bit of world building here (as it helps explains the cards) and we will cover the story in an update over the weekend.

Mor Nadar is a world of many peoples, often these are nods to historic cultures who live anachronistically alongside the many fictional cultures and species of the realms.

The Arsaidh are an ancient culture of man who roamed Mor Nadar long before the current era. We introduced their concept in the original campaign and so those that are familiar with the first kickstarter will have seen this image before. However for some of you this will be new:

The concept art gives you an idea of what the Arsaidh look like if you encounter them today. The intent is that if we are able to make the Apprentice Rank content you would encounter an undead civil war taking place in the Ancient Crypts near the great city of Dun Mordhain that you are trying to enter. The Celti are the predominant culture in the lands to the west of Dun Mordhain with extensive tribes stretching over much of the northern continent known as the Cold Lands.

To help with orientation, here is a small part of the map of Central Mor Nadar. If you look for the huge red Capital City marker in the Middle you can see Dun Mordhain (roughly on a latitude with London in our world). This is the city you are trying to flee to in the original Caves and Sewers sets.

The Arsaidh once inhabited most of the lands shown here but centuries ago they disappeared and were replaced by the Celti peoples. The Celti live in several massive realms beyond this small excerpt but here we can see Na Glinn (The Glens) and Ridaru (Royal Oaks) which are in turn inhabited by countless Celti tribes (often an homage to the iron age tribes of northern Europe).

Note the Druid from the original Druid Booster set (now part of Novice Booster Set 1) is from the Celti culture, and has remained our most popular hero at every convention we have attended to date:

There is a further undead culture known as the Dia Fir (God Men) who predate even the Arsaidh. These were great chieftains buried with their animals who arise from time to time and wield incredible power. I am mentioning this here as a specific nod to one of our backers Peter who has been with us since day 1 and is completely obsessed with Liches.

So that you can see how the sets from the Caves and Sewers interact with the planned sets for Apprentice Rank please see the Environments diagram below. Note Deepsorrow is many thousands of miles away from here - there is good reason for this (the Cinematic Campaign is global in nature) and we will explain how they interact in due course.

Why are you telling us all this Kev?

My hope is that now that you know a bit more about who the Arsaidh are you will be able to follow the story more easily in Deepsorrow and also understand why finding an item with the Arsaidh keyword on it is an exciting thing. So that 'Arsaidh Helm' you found?  Well it probably should be handled with care because it's definitely old.  Also who knows, maybe Peter finally gets to pretend he's a Lich - or was heroically devoured by one!

And what of the other cultures we mention? We hope to be able to continue the growth in the project and get to the Rasni culture soon. For now I have probably done enough world building and so I will be brief. The Rasni are not a lost culture, they are very much present in Mor Nadar, they believe in portents and are fond of gazing at the sky. The butterfly holds a special place in their culture, for when a butterfly flaps her wings nobody is quite sure what has happened somewhere else in the world. We're excited to share the Rasni Butterfly Shield with you folks. You'll note you can't use a 2H weapon with it (for all those fans of the big weapons). We hope you have a lot of fun with it. You can use it to help mitigate a bad result but oh my when that butterfly glows, it really is charming ;)

Upgrade pack news (as an Add-on)

Thanks for all the responses! It looks like most of you would be happy with the components printed and a pdf for the rules. Also, I agree with the sentiment that once you have learned the game you won't need the training scenario assets if we are trying to keep this to the bare essentials. Note the punchboards are A4 but I had an idea this morning that we could get them punched at Whatz and bagged so that the package size would only be A5 sized (the size of the Combat Aid).

However, the preliminary investigations I made on shipping even this much smaller package were not encouraging. All of the shipping vendors I tried were looking for a sum in excess of £25 per package (even the small one) to airmail it from China directly to you. This seems a very expensive way of doing this when we could have them sent via the sea along with the rest of the published materials and keep the costs down accordingly. I will keep trying but I think a Wave 1 shipping solution for the upgrade pack would be prohibitively expensive because of the shipping costs.

Next Steps?

  • We will keep sharing the news about the page (we saw a material increase today and are very grateful for it).
  • We will continue to improve the page so that it becomes more user friendly (new Stretch Goal image is under construction).
  • We will keep working with Whatz to see what we can do for you on the Upgrade pack Add-On.
  • I will get the associated Lore for Gnimshkenka up over the next few days (we have been flat out trying to improve the page and stretch the campaign for everyone's benefit).

Please keep the suggestions coming, we are getting traction! We really hope we can get to the £75k number soon. It is a massive double unlock and will make the Enhanced Edition of the Weeping Caves become a reality for the first time!

Cheers

Kev

Tabletop Simulator Training Scenario Live, Discord, Rulebook news, Upgrade packs
over 1 year ago – Fri, Dec 02, 2022 at 12:43:48 PM

Hi folks,

A quick one today.

Tabletop Simulator Training Scenario

I'm excited to share the Training Scenario on Tabletop Simulator with you. Full credit to Morgan @ Jovial for creating this. If you have Tabletop Simulator click on the link, it will add it to your subscriptions, you will then find the game added in the Workshop section when you open Tabletop Simulator.

Core Rulebook pdf

The file has now been uploaded to BGG. When it has been approved we will share the link for you all.

Upgrade packs

We are trying to resolve something that a few of you have raised. When we launched the Kickstarter we were always really clear we wanted to give away a free upgrade pack with Deepsorrow which would give you the Readiness Tracker, Combat Aid and combat tokens, for the Caves and Sewers plus two tweaked scenarios from the Caves. This would mean that because you would have the new books with Deepsorrow anyway you would in effect 'catch up' by having these components and your original Caves and Sewers sets would be upgraded.

We can do this fairly easily and cost effectively because we are putting the same punchboards from the Reprinted Caves and Sewers sets into the upgrade pack and we can print the Adventures accordingly. These also fit inside the Deepsorrow box so shipping it is no real additional issue because it is going to be with the Deepsorrow set.

Anyone who is starting out and purchasing the reprinted Caves set would not need the Upgrade Kit, the content is already in their set.

However we have had a few of you reach out to say that they do not wish to purchase Deepsorrow at this point but would like to purchase the Upgraded components as an add-on. We had not anticipated this!

This is where it gets complex unfortunately. Having been through it, without Deepsorrow we believe you would need the following:

  • 1x A Core Rulebook (A4)
  • 4x Punchboards (2 each for Caves and Sewers)
  • 1x A4 Flowchart set
  • 1x A4 How to Play Training Scenario (the one we have posted on BGG and Tabletop Simulator)
  • 1x deck of yellow Training Scenario cards (the one we have posted on BGG and Tabletop Simulator)
  • 1x A4 Sized box to ship it in

Creating this bespoke set would involve us printing these components and then assembling them at the Factory. We are usually required to have a minimum print run of 1,000 units to produce anything. We would then need to ship these to a fulfilment hub and then send them onwards via local mail.

Our concern is that the cost of producing these will be prohibitive unless there is sufficient demand (the factory can assemble a minimum thousand units on any production run).

We have not got to pricing this yet.  It would however help us a lot to understand the volume of demand for this product. Please can anyone who may want to purchase this Upgrade Set (subject to pricing of course) comment in response to this update. We can use that to gauge demand.

If there is only limited demand we will do what we can to perhaps hand assemble a few of the packs rather than do a whole production run.

In the meantime, thanks for all the support we have received to date. We've managed to unlock a lot of additional value with the pledges already. We are working hard to deliver more as we enter the final week.

Cheers

£60k - Meeting the Envoy (Part 1)
over 1 year ago – Wed, Nov 30, 2022 at 11:35:08 AM

Hi folks I have split this Update into two parts: Part 1 - this one, covers real world stuff and the game. Part 2 covers the lore (and hopefully news on the big box) which I intend to post up tomorrow.

£60k and 700 backers! Thanks so much to everyone for helping us get to this stage of the journey. We are excited to confirm we are adding four new loot cards (Dagger Key, Chain Lantern, Crested Helmet, and Omu's Greaves) plus a further Event card (Gleam of Stone) which you can use to add further variety to your adventures.

Omu's Greaves will be our card spotlight for this update (standard caveat: everything remains subject to change prior to publication). As we were designing Deepsorrow we wanted to add in some armour for you, but we need to do it in a way that suits the lore and the game mechanics. Hugh and I were talking about greaves and helms and shields as potential stretch goals when we recieved our review back from Mike Siggins at Ludeme (aka Sumo). Mike told us that he still understood the penniless peasants argument for LU but that a little 'softening of the regime' in a way that would not break the bank would make him (and he believes others) smile.

You can find Mike's review here:

 https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2972950/illumination-deepsorrow-first-impressions

We had a chuckle when we realised that we were both on the same track and therefore as a nod to that moment Omu's greaves have been duly enchanted. We were quite clear with Mike that we did not want to just add in lots of items that give a simple +1 advantage all the time, these are OK now and again but it is not very creative and it simply adds more maths to the process which is not fun for most folks. Instead we have items that have abilities which you can utilise by spending the Supply token for one or more effects.

Note the supply tokens are limited though (this is LU folks and we are at Novice Rank), you need to decide whether to take a camp action to hammer out those blemishes or not!

Pledge reward Flexibility - A number of you have stated that they do not need the Novice Booster 1 pledge that we added to the Quest and New Content pledges as you already have them. We anticipated this but did not want anyone feeling like they had not had the opportunity to 'catch up' on their collection. We want you to have what you need and we definitely don't want to create any additional burden on the environment of making and sending things people don't need. We will modify the pledge manager to make sure you can elect to take one free Dragon Dice set instead of the Novice Booster 1 set if you so wish.

80k Unlock - we have added another locked stretch goal to the page (Meeting the Rasni) which will be a further four Loot items and another Event card added in to Novice Booster 2. The Rasni are a key culture in the Deepsorrow Campaign and you will learn more of their ways soon we hope.

Two new unlocks - when we get feedback we listen to it. We cannot make LU the exact game that everybody wants (that's what home rules are for), however if we think there is a common benefit for many we do what we can to look into it and adopt it. Some of our regular contriutors on BGG (Vern for one and others too) asked a while back about standalone adventures in the Deepsorrow set. Our response to date has always been that the 12 Episodes that are in Deepsorrow are a richer experience and really let you explore more of Mor Nadar (which is what many of you told us you wanted after Caves and Sewers). However Daniel at the Dungeon Dive mentioned that he wanted us to have more standalone adventures in this set too, and a number of you have subsequently told us that sometimes you just want to grab your staff and head off to see what you will find on a one off adventure. This is not something we had anticipated and not something we built in to the Stretch Goals originally folks!

However we want to listen.  There are currently 8 Cinematic Campaign Episodes and 8 standalone Scenarios in the Caves set and the Sewers set. In Deepsorrow there are 12 Cinematic Campaign Episodes of which you play 8. Note it needs to be 8 across each set so everyone levels up to level 9 at the same time. To help make this happen we are adding in an additional Caves based and Sewers based standalone Scenario into the Deepsorrow set via new Stretch Goals at £65k anf £75k. With more planned after that. Please note that just like the Scenarios in the Weeping Caves and Great Sewers these reference specific cards in the Deepsorrow set and so do not apply to the Newcomer Pledge. However for those that are unaware please note you already have 16 Adventures in the Weeping Caves set, there really is a lot of gameplay, before you even get to the additional ones we have given for free in Novice Booster 1.

Print and play prequel adventure - a few of you have been asking about having a game that they can play now so that you can try out the game and also help generate some buzz for the campaign on BGG (and perhaps other forums). This is hugely appreciated! Hugh had actually created a prequel adventure before we launched which helps you see a bit more of the story behing the Trials at Firesorrow. We are topping and tailing that and will share it with you shortly.

The new format Rulebook - a few of you have been asking to look at this. Please note it is complete however Ricky at Box of Delights spotted a few things that we had not changed between V1 and V2 which made a few of the page references incorrect. We want to tidy up this and a couple of other things Ricky kindly suggested then we will post it as a pdf accordingly.

Bigger Box - I am still waiting to hear back from Whatz, I will hopefully have news for the 'Part 2' of this Update.

Lore - I wanted to separate the real world stuff from the lore on this occassion and will post this in the 'Part 2' of this update.

For now I want to express our gratitude for where we have got to. KS is a much tougher place for us than it was 6 years ago, the number of projects is huge and there are some very big campaigns out there who have much better known IPs and minis which are often attractive to many.  We will keep doing what we do which is to try and build a world together, and to give you a rich RPG-like experience with our game whenever we can.

Wishing you and your families the very best.

Kev
